چکیده

In type 2 diabetes there is a progressive defect of insulin secretion that precedes the development of hyperglycemia (1). This defect appears to be at least in part due to a deficit in -cell mass (2– 4). Several therapeutic strategies are now being proposed that may reverse the defect in -cell mass in people with type 2 diabetes, for example glucagon-like peptide 1 or glucagon-like peptide 1–like surrogates (5). However, the relationship between -cell mass and the blood glucose in humans is uncertain. Here we report the relative -cell volume in pancreata obtained at autopsy from people with well-documented blood glucose concentrations in life.

Ghrelin associate determinative markers of fasting blood glucose in none diabetic healthy obese males

Introduction: Ghrelin, a gut neuropeptide, plays an important role in appetite, food intake and weight regulation. The aim of the present study was to determine serum ghrelin in relation to fasting glucose concentration and effective markers in glucose level (insulin, insulin resistance, beta- cell function) in none-diabetic obese males. Methods: We studied the baseline glucose, serum insulin a...

ارتباط بین گرلین سرم با شاخص عملکرد سلول‌های بتا و مقاومت به انسولین در افراد مبتلا به دیابت نوع دو

Background and purpose: Çonsiderable attention has recently been paid to the role of ghrelin hormone in the metabolism of carbohydrate. Beta-cell dysfunction is also considered to be an important factor in the prevalence of diabetes. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between serum ghrelin with beta-cell function and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials...

The Relationship between Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Metabolic Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Abstract Objective: Globally, 3-5.2 percent of people suffer from diabetes which is one of the most serious metabolic disorders resulting in an increase in inflammatory biomarkers e.g. interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and C-reactive protein. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress and fasting blood glucose, lipid profile and a...

Effect of Islamic fasting on body weight, blood pressure, electrolytes, blood cell count and certain serum biochemical variables in males

The objectives of this study were to Investigate the changes in blood pressure ( systolic and diastolic) , serum lipids , glucose, electrolytes, blood cell count and weight during Ramadan fasting in apparently healthy muslem men. Eighty male college students or staffs were followed in 3 stages during the month of Ramadan. Blood pressure, weight and height were measured on day one ( baseline) ,a...

Functional Assessment of Pancreatic β-Cell Area in Humans

OBJECTIVE beta-Cell mass declines progressively during the course of diabetes, and various antidiabetic treatment regimens have been suggested to modulate beta-cell mass. However, imaging methods allowing the monitoring of changes in beta-cell mass in vivo have not yet become available. We address whether pancreatic beta-cell area can be assessed by functional test of insulin secretion in human...
